Blue Light Therapy for Adolescents

As a treatment for acne, Blue Light therapy is receiving more attention due to its safety and effectiveness. While overall effectiveness has not been widely studied, the therapy shows great promise. Many patients have used the therapy either with a dermatologist or with at-home equipment specially produced for this use.

Can Adolescents Use Blue Light Therapy?

Since acne occurs more often in adolescents than in adults, younger people are great candidates for Blue Light therapy. Blue Light therapy has little to no side effects, and is a safe and easy treatment for mild to moderate acne. The light reduces acne outbreaks and prevents new lesions from developing by killing the bacteria that causes the lesions to occur.

Blue Light therapy can be an effective way to control light or moderate acne in adolescents, but severe acne should be addressed with a different treatment regimen.

Concerns about Blue Light Therapy

Since Blue Light therapy produces low levels of ultraviolet light, some have expressed concern about long-term effects, especially for younger patients. The levels of UV light are extremely low, however, and so are unlikely to cause serious long-term issues.

For more information about Blue Light therapy, its use on adolescent patients, and any possible concerns about the treatment, consult with a dermatologist or doctor.
